OVpay: the road to effortless payment in public transport

Man checkt in met betaalpas bij bus

A groundbreaking innovation is fundamentally transforming public transportation in the Netherlands. In collaboration with Translink and all Dutch public transport providers, we are joining forces to introduce millions of travelers to OVpay, a new payment method that allows you to pay with your debit card, credit card, phone, or in the future, even with the (new) public transport card.

Revolution in public transport

At present, the Netherlands has over 14 million active public transport chip cards, but that is about to change. We have developed an entirely new payment experience for all public transport passengers across the entire country. The aim? Traveling throughout the Netherlands is now even more convenient. You can easily check in and pay with your debit card, credit card, or mobile.

Building a fantastic travel experience

To achieve this ambitious goal, we assembled a team of specialists. Collaborating with our experts in service design and behavioral research, we explored and shaped the desired service process from the traveler's perspective. This involved in‑depth research into the travel experience of various groups, including people with disabilities, the elderly, and business travelers. We then translated the findings into valuable insights that serve as a solid foundation for our revamped and improved service. As the icing on the cake, our visual and UX designers created an intuitive and user‑friendly interface.

OVpay team

I'm proud that as MakerStreet, we have been collaborating with Translink and all Dutch transportation companies for such a long time and truly prioritize the traveler throughout the entire design process, from service design to app development.

OVpay: the future of payment in public transport

The result of all this hard work? OVpay, a new payment method where you can pay with your debit card, credit card, phone, or in the future, even with the (new) public transport card. While the service can already be used, it is never truly finished. We constantly keep our finger on the pulse, both in quantitative and qualitative aspects. This way, we can closely monitor progress and adjust as needed, with the aim of providing every traveler with a seamless travel experience. Get ready for a smooth journey with public transport, where convenience and innovation go hand in hand.
